Your kitchen units will probably be the biggest investment you will ever make on your own home. That is because the kitchen is the central part of the home, where all the members of the family bump into each other most of the time. It is also the one place in the house where they are bound to stay and spend the most time together. A lot of the family drama and the happy moments you will experience at home will take place in your kitchen.
Because a lot of things are bound to happen inside your kitchen, it is important that you consider planning what kind of kitchen units you will need and how you are going to lay them out in your kitchen space. Planning a kitchen is not as difficult as it sounds like as long as you know how.
There are actually three factors that you need to weigh in when you plan the layout of your kitchen. These three factors are, namely: available space, activities expected to be done in the kitchen, and storage space.
Available Space
Naturally, all the kitchen units that you will have to buy will have to conform to whatever amount of space you have available in your house for a kitchen. Thus, the question would be: How much space do you have available for setting up your kitchen?
Always remember that proportion counts in interior design, especially when designing kitchens and fitting in kitchen units. Small spaces cannot be cluttered by big tables and appliances, whereas large spaces would require an expansive layout that will effectively utilise available space.
Activities in the Kitchen
When you plan the layout of your kitchen, you have to consider the activities that you need to get done in your kitchen. These activities are generally grouped together as: shopping, storage, cleaning, preparation and cooking. The areas in the kitchen where these activities are done are often referred to as the zones of the kitchen.
When you draw up the plans for your kitchen, make sure that all these activities are zoned together and that these different zones are accessible to one another. This will make your kitchen dynamic, functional and efficient.
Storage Space
One mistake that many homeowners often fall into is failing to plan ample storage space for their kitchen. The amount of storage that these homeowners think is enough do not actually turn out to be enough. And so they end up with clutter in the kitchen.
When buying kitchen units, you should always consider the cabinets and the shelving that you will be purchasing. Are they enough for the consumable and non-consumable items that you need to store in your kitchen? Or would you have a separate pantry for your kitchen things?
The kitchen is the most important room of the house. As such, it needs careful planning and consideration when it comes to its layout and the kitchen units to be used in furnishing and equipping it. Always think your choices through when planning your kitchen.
